The hub supports patient enrollment, benefit verification, prior authorization, payer policy clarification, PA appeals, billing and coding education, and ongoing claim and appeal support — across both pharmacy and medical benefit. For specialty and rare disease therapies, this is the operational backbone that decides whether a prescription becomes a treatment.
Pharmacy benefit (Part D) covers most small-molecule drugs, often dispensed through retail or mail. Medical benefit (Part B) covers physician-administered therapies like infusions, gene therapies, and cellular treatments, where the site of care, billing model, and reimbursement dynamics are different. UBC’s reimbursement specialists are trained in both, with deeper expertise in the medical benefit complexity that high-cost specialty therapies typically involve.
Reimbursement staff with insurance and healthcare backgrounds (often with oncology, rare disease, or specialty billing experience), patient access coordinators, and clinical team members. People are matched to programs based on therapy type and patient population, not assigned generically — therapeutic familiarity changes how quickly access issues get resolved.
The team manages prior authorizations end-to-end, including initial submission, payer-specific policy interpretation, and appeals when denied. Where appropriate, eService tools handle status updates and document exchange digitally to keep the patient and prescriber informed. Appeals are tracked to outcome so the team learns what is working at each payer rather than restarting the process each time.
UBC supports digitally-enabled enrollment via in-workflow integration, partnerships including Surescripts for specialty patient enrollment, and electronic benefits verification through UBC Pathways. The goal is to start the access process where the prescription is written rather than waiting for a paper enrollment form to be faxed and re-keyed.
Speed to therapy is the headline metric, supported by enrollment completion rates, prior authorization approval rates, time-in-status by step, denial patterns by payer, and appeal success rates. Real-time visibility — not month-end reporting — is what allows the team to fix bottlenecks while a patient is still waiting.
Once a patient is on therapy, ongoing support coordinates re-verifications, formulary changes, plan transitions, and any changes to access conditions through the year. Insurance coverage shifts — sometimes mid-year and without warning — so the operational model assumes change rather than treating it as an exception.

President & Chief Executive Officer
Bekki Bracken Brown serves as the President and CEO of UBC, guiding the company’s mission and values, including the improvement of access for patients to receive better outcomes. She oversees all aspects of UBC, such as operations, business growth strategy, sales and marketing, and acquisition support.
With over 20 years of industry experience, Ms. Brown brings knowledge from a successful career in senior management from her tenure at Quintiles, INC Research, and, most recently, with Syneos Health. She’s been a member of the North Carolina BIO Board of Directors since 2019. She is also a member of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association — Southeast Chapter and CHIEF, an organization that supports women executive leaders. Ms. Brown earned her bachelor’s degree at Duke University.
